THE PERMANENT LABORATORY: A DIALOGUE AMONG PEERS

The genesis of this recording project lies in the work carried out within the Permanent Laboratory of Musical Research (LPRM), a space that for over thirty years has served as a “neutral field” for exchange and experimentation. For us — Anaïs del Sordo (voice), Tommaso Iacoviello (trumpet), Marco Pasinetti (guitar), Gabriele Pagliano (double bass), and Stefano Battaglia (piano) — the laboratory experience has not been a hierarchical academic path, but rather a collective inquiry into the essence of sound. In this context, we have shared an idea of music as a radiating event, capable of transcending genre boundaries in search of a synthesis between acoustics, philosophy, and structural rigor. Our aim has never been the execution of predefined models, but rather to inhabit a process of continuous discovery.

MORPHOLOGICAL STRUCTURES AND THE PATH OF THE SUBJECT

The core of our research has focused on morphological and polymorphic structures. Instead of repeating patterns, we have worked on creating musical “subjects” — whether timbral, rhythmic, or melodic — endowed with their own vital capacity. Minimal structures have thus emerged, based on evocations through words and texts, or on role-functions, experimenting with the possibilities that arise by defining only the combinations of instruments over time and their contextual or narrative roles.

In our practice, each subject undertakes a journey that begins with an intuition, passes through phases of expansion, and confronts obstacles through dialogue and confrontation among our instruments. This process of metamorphosis is central to us: transforming while remaining oneself grants the musical action a recognizable identity in its development. We have also explored an experiential path aimed at investigating altered states of perception and presence, where surrender and subtraction allow us to discover new expressive depths and to expand the sense of time. It is an approach that merges the symbolic dimension with artisanal know-how, in which the trace becomes the final outcome of the relationship between the contents expressed in the orality of the present.

THE ALBUM AS HARVEST AND RETURN

The transition from pure research to recording the album was experienced as an act of giving back. If music is a gift we receive during the sowing phase in the laboratory, the album represents the final “harvest”: a testimony to the process that transforms sonic material into a shared narrative experience. Each track is the result of what we define as “instant composition,” where the expressive urgency of improvisation merges with an almost organic structural coherence.

In this encounter between voice, guitar, double bass, trumpet, and piano, we celebrate not only our musical interplay, but also our shared belief in the transformative and healing power of sound—capable of constantly rising from its own ashes in an endless process of metamorphosis.
